OK, well, this is going to look like I've been *really* lazy but I
have been *so* busy it's untrue ..... I'm still unemployed and it's
starting to show .... anyway, enough of my personal problems. Over the
last month I have spent odd days experimenting with various new underlying
HTML stuff but nothing I have directly implemented. The biggest new
addition is the frame at the bottom which, tho I am loathe to use them
(we all know that, by now, don't we?!) I can see no other way of streaming
the other new medium .... which are the two songs Hotter Days
and Navigation which were written, performed and everything else
by Dan Conley and kindly donated .... we love ya man! ...
err ... what else ... well, the cloud background has been redesigned
(can ya see it?!) so it's now a single layer GIF instead of a JPG, this
allows me to use transparency and opens up some new options I can play
with later ...
oh, and there's a little big brother element that's been introduced
on the main page .... hey, we all need, sponsors, tho, don't we? ...
not a proper website, otherwise ....
and, yours truly submitted us to a large number of search engines to
a resounding unsuccess. the only one we appeared on was altavista.com
where we reached the dizzy heights of 3rd place!!! ... w00h00! ... but,
then, about a week after that some dodgy middle earth web site pushed
us off when they resubmitted *all* their pages .... greedy beggars.
other than that, just the usual updates to the email address book,
the links page and the guestbook
As there have been some major changes this time around there is likely
to be a lot of HTML problems - broken links, crap layout etc. please
bare with me, and email
me if you think I've missed something ....
28/08/99
not much done recently, work has been getting on top of me ... I'm not
even sure if I've kept the Guestbook up-to-date ....
25/08/99
finally I have reinstalled everything on my puter, have reinstalled
everything on another computer, been attacked by a virus, and sat staring
blindly at a cd case, looking for a serial no. and, at the end of all
this, I can say, gladly, the Dreamweaver 2 is finally installed and
u shall hear not another word about it ... (besides, Net Objects Fusion
is coming too ... hehe) .... I've been working very steadily recently
so not a lot has been done web-wise .... esp. cos I didn't have access
to a HTML editor ...
also on its way is a nice O'Reilly
Designing
with Javascript book ....so, when I finally get chance to read thru
all this extra stuff, hopefully lots of new stuff should be heading
this way ....
as for now, just a few routine updates to the links page and the guestbook.
17/08/99
work commitments have forced a slow progress this week ... and will
probably continue to do so in the near future ... I've tried to keep
the links page, email address book and guestbook up to date - but other
than that, all I have had time to do is finally, once and for all (hopefully)
finished the table problem. after being reminded that my quick and dirty
fix doesn't work with browsers under linux I have now with a bit (no,
hell, a *lot*) of surfing on the net discovered that it is, as I thought,
a fairly common problem that just isn't written about!!!! grrrr!! ...
Why didn't anyone tell me about The
Single Pixel Trick????!?!?!?!?!!
*sigh* ... anyway, I have cleared my inbox and cut a number of CDs for
those ppl who wanted them so, now, hopefully I will have time to reinstall
Win98 to fit on my paltry HD along with my new version of office and
the eagerly awaited Dreamweaver!!! And, for those who were enjoying
the anticipation of it ... keep holding your breath - this time I'm
expecting Net Objects Fusion 4!!! w00h00 ...
Let the good times roll ....
13/08/99
well, it's Friday the 13th so I decided against any major changes ...
:) I updated the main page, the guestbook, and I've been working on
some of the behind the scenes HTML in the photo pages to fit it in line
with my new fix for the tables. not much of a visible change to the
layout ... but, trust me, it's there ... :) I also added links to the
claremont place scrapbook, so that it wouldn't be such a big job integrating
it when I get round to putting something interesting there ...
12/08/99
*phew* ... not much done today due to the *large* volume of email (nearly
20 in two days!) I've received over the last few days ... isn't it great
to see I'm popular, now ... :) ... thanks for all your comments ...
most of them are in the guestbook ... and I appreciate the feedback
- at one point I thought this was one man's sad dedication to an extinct
part of his life thing ... :) .. anyway, everyone should have received
a reply by now ... sorry, if u were waiting! ... and I've updated the
guestbook, links page and birthday book from some of the mails ... don't
forget to send me any extra birthdays or anything else, I don't have
... :)
11/08/99
Well ... a large gap here but that's because, alas, I have work commitments
and, god forbid I admit it, a social life (of sorts) too .... (I'm ignoring
those calls of liar I hear in the background ... hmmm ...). On the rumour
mill is that this site may probably soon be hosting the infamous Flat24
site ... assuming, of course, that I can face the harassment I'll get
as webmaster, that is and that my ISP could cope with the hits ... Dreamweaver
has finally arrived (Thank YOU, Royal Mail .... jeez) .... so
after I've unwrapped the cellophane I'm hoping it'll speed up the development
somewhat! ... umm ... added the Group 5 COM125 web pages to the DCS
Spods Scrapbook, and came up with the idea of the birthday book ...
so I'm looking for submissions as soon as possible ... cos I have noone's
... sigh .... oh, yeah .. and I found a temporary fix for the
table column problem ... not very elegant, tho ... double sigh
.....
03/08/99
Hmm .. didn't manage to do much today .... added the E. Burnley endorsement
to the guestbook ... w00h00!!! ... the nicest person in the department
likes this site!!!! .... what more could I want?? :) Updated the flat
24 quotes wall and the email directory.... and figured out the idea
I had about solving the tables problem didn't work .... *sigh* ... back
to the drawing board, I spose ...
02/08/99
OK, I've sort of got the first two photo pages in a viewable state but,
as I suspected, the tables that hold the images don't resize very well,
and despite spending all day trying to stop it from crushing the bar
on the left it still does if the browser window is reduced enough. tchh
... OK, so everyone knows my HTML sucks ... anyway, it'll do until someone
enlightens me on the proper way to do it. Added a few other scrapbook
pages which I conceived in boredom and also had the idea of adding some
of those crap list joke things we used to pass around during lectures
that I have lying around here somewhere to the DCS scrapbook when I
find something else worth putting in there .... Pictures, anyone?
01/08/99
Entering into a new month and I have spent some time sorting out the
first couple of pages to go in the Broad Lane scrapbook. I was more
than a little upset when I discovered the nice spanking new JPEG optimiser
I had downloaded and was experimenting with a while ago has gone and
expired it's 30 day trial period and now refuses to do batch conversions.
*sigh* .... the first photos, of the end of year carnival, have been
converted by hand, therefore and have started the ball rolling. Many
more pages to follow I would hope, and I have had some thoughts about
a cast list with a page per person ... but, obviously, that's only if
I'm *really* bored!
31/07/99
Introduced the ICQ Bagshot Row IRC Chat Room to the site, which is amusing,
if pretty unusable. Took a while updating all the links for the pages,
I'm sure there must be an easier way (and, no, I don't want to use frames
- they suck ... yech). All scanning has been completed of the photos
I have in my possession and I plan to be working on the scrapbooks tomorrow.
I have a rough idea how I'm gonna lay it out but that scrapbook main
page is annoying me. I found time to reorganise all the pages to fit
the new scrapbook structure and added a few pages related to the Broad
Lane Crew scrapbook, including a number of hours spent turning the text
Dave sent me into a nice-looking
html quote wall. *phew!* Also added a photographs page to encourage
ppl to send me some mail!!! :)
The Award
for Webmasters making a diference was updated with the new score.
Gonna have to work a bit harder to up that, methinks. Maybe when the
gallery is finished we'll get an upgrade. :) Dreamweaver has also been
resent, and should be here mid-next week, I'm sure. Hmmm ... I'm not
making excuses, honest! btw, I have to thank Hypermaster
for that software plus oodles of other help through the years .... cheers,
friend!
25/07/99
Back home and still no sign of Dreamweaver .... *sigh* ... making do
with Hot Metal Pro 5, but it just don't feel right .... *sob* .... The
scrapbook idea is taking shape.
24/07/99
Well, I'm up here in sunny Sheffield for graduation .... Congrats everyone
!!!! errr ... well ... Commiserations too for those who didn't get what
they wanted .... :( ... as for the page, a few updates here and there,
a new award added and some HTML tidyup .... and that's about as much
I could cope with .... I never want to *see* Malibu again .... *groan*
.... hehehe :)
13/07/99
Maintenance work really .... a few updates to the guestbook and links
pages.
12/07/99
*phew!* .... spent a *lot* of time reorganising this lot and rewriting
the HTML code by hand, removing all the "extra" little delights
left in by Hot Metal Pro 4 .... also added the ICQ contact details (check
out the cool graphic which tells you if I'm online or not!) .... a few
additions and corrections to the Email Address Book and Links pages,
and added a submissions form to the Guestbook.
Final big thing is the new title on the Home page, courtesy of Sam
Chapman, neat, huh? ... :) .... kinda screwing up the formatting
when the browser ain't full screen, tho ... hmmm ... better look into
that .....
08/07/99
Fixed background problem on the Links and Email Address Book pages.
Now, how did that local file call sneak in there?? ... :) ... Updates
to the Email Address Book too. Scanning has been completed of the photos
I have been lent. Now, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new software
which I am assured is in the post. :)
04/07/99
Updated the address book slightly after a global email from DA highlighted
some broken links. Work has continued on the scanning of photos now
that a scanner has temporarily become available. These ones are mainly
from Claremont Place, tho. Finally, a few additions to the Guestbook
were made.
02/07/99
Added the Guestbook idea. Let's see if I get any response from that,
huh. Or maybe I'll find out I'm just writing to myself here. hahaha
well, it'd better be hahaha. hmmmm .....
Also forgot to mention that I do tend to pop into Efnet
IRC of a late evening
and can be found hanging around in #wiggle,
if anyone's at all interested.
01/07/99
Hello,
GRRRR!!! ..... well ... thanx to Hot Metal Pro 4.0 and it's ... err
... lack of stability, is the politest way to put it, I'm having to
write this section all over again! ..
Well, after all those months of mouthing off in the pub (and, let's
face it, I only did it so that everyone would try to keep in contact
with me!) here we are at the first upload of the page. I'm amazed I
agreed to do it, and even more amazed that I picked Hot Metal Pro 4
to implement it (don't worry HTML fans, I have a copy of Dreamweaver
in the post! *rubs hands greedily*). OK, the email address list and
links pages are both now in a state where they're ready for submissions
.... so send them 'em in, if u got 'em. Some new emails are slowly but
surely trickling in. The Photo Gallery has a lot of work left but that's
mainly because I'm having difficulties getting access to a scanner and
I haven't decided how to display the ones I have. It'll get here soon(ish),
so send in any photos you have.
Thanks to everyone who's offered to help with the code, but, to be honest,
there isn't much HTML coding to be done (I'm aiming for neat and simple
- I *hate* waiting for pages to d/l!) but I have suggested to those
who wanna help that they might want to attempt some graphix. I freely
admit my graphix ability is seriously flawed and with everything else
I have on, I doubt I'll have time in the near future to figure something
out. So, if u feel like it, why not have a bash at a nice ickle logo
to go unobtrusively in the top left corner? or, perhaps, a big-ish title
logo and/or medium size ones for the individual pages ....
Either way, I'm off now to watch Wimble .... errr ... work on the Photo
Gallery .... *ahem*
Enjoy .....
I also make no apologies for any mistakes
or updates required - the pages can be changed (eventually) by mailing me.
